Microscience Microscopy Congress Manchester
2014 & 2015
Manchester
Art and Design students are familiar with fairs like Frieze and 100% Design but an event like the MMC is a quite different experience – a trade fair for state of the art scientific technologies, an international conference and an exhibition of scientific images. It offered a rare opportunity for students to meet scientists and manufacturers to gain an understanding of their world and to forge links with them. Manufacturers were generous in taking time to explain the potential of the latest microscopes and in one case Lambda Photometrics agreed to loan a £90,000 scanning electron microscope to CSM for the MiPattern event.
The first visit coincided with Rob Kesseler winning the Royal Microscopical Society International Scientific Imaging Competition for Life Sciences for his image of a Medicago seed and the centre spread in the Guardian for his work on show at the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show.
“It was fascinating and very helpful for my research to see the RMS International Scientific imaging Competition. I had a chance to speak to the judges and acquire further understanding of how they valued the image, which was fascinating and will feed directly into my current practice. I will also be blogging about my conversations had this week … which will feature on the AHRC website”.

Events like these, especially on the periphery of your interests, will unlock your practice in totally unexpected ways. We come to CSM to be challenged – to push ourselves creatively, theoretically and technically. Central Saint Martins opens the doors to events like this to keep us engaged with other perspectives.
