Oxford Brookes University. Department of Biological and Medical Sciences
Until recently access to the technologies of contemporary science have been difficult for artists and designers to access, but with the emergence of digital technologies and an increasing popular demand for their spectacular images, opportunities are growing. The bio-imaging unit at Oxford Brookes have built up an impressive reputation and in collaboration with Rob Kesseler developed a series of immersive workshops in the bio-imaging facility lead by Dr Louise Hughes. Groups of UAL students worked with research members of the unit to examine a range of organic and synthetic materials using state of the art electron and light microscopes. Pencil impressions on paper, fragments of finger nail, offcuts from copperplate and live parasites provided fertile subjects for closer examination.
