Ceramic Art London (CAL), the leading international fair for contemporary ceramics now in its 12th year, was held at Central Saint Martins for the first time in 2016 marking another historic chapter in the hundred-year history of Ceramics at the college. Presented by The Craft Potters Association in partnership with Ceramic Review provided a unique platform for over 80 emerging and established ceramicists from across the world to present their latest work.
Working in collaboration with the Ceramic Design team Rob Kesseler curated CLAYTALKS@CAL, a three day series of talks, demonstrations, film screenings, debates and panel discussions designed to afford visitors an insight into current issues, working practices and techniques involved in the creation of ceramic art. An archeologist, an engineer, a mineralogist, a curator, a TV producer, makers and graduates spanning forty years, afforded visitors an insight into an expansive range of current issues, working practices and techniques involved in the creation of ceramic art.
To coincide with the event stage 1 Ceramic Design Students created the installation Lost and Found, for the Window Gallery in the crossing celebrating the rich materiality of the medium. Fragments of discarded and broken ceramics were fused with fresh clay to form a continuous 15m frieze running across the windows.
